Boat hire vs boat charter in Cape Town: what’s the difference?

Boat charter, boat hire and boat club are often used as if they were the same thing. They are three different ways to get onto the water in Cape Town, and knowing the difference saves you from booking the wrong one.

Boat charter: you are the guest

A boat charter in Cape Town typically means the boat comes with a skipper, and often with crew. You and your guests are passengers: a sunset cruise, a celebration, a trip along the Atlantic coast. A private boat charter gives your group the whole boat for that outing.

Yacht charter and yacht hire usually refer to larger sailing or motor yachts and are, as a rule, crewed as well. Many charters in Cape Town depart from the V&A Waterfront.

Boat hire: you take the boat

Boat hire, also called boat rental, means you book a boat for a set slot and pay for that trip. With self-drive hire you skipper it yourself, which normally requires you to show suitable competence. Private boat hire with a skipper sits somewhere between hire and charter.

Boat club: boating as a membership

A boat club is neither a one-off charter nor a single hire. You join as a member and get ongoing access to a fleet that the club owns and manages. It is built for people who want to go boating regularly and would otherwise think about buying a boat.

Where Cape Boat Club fits in

Cape Boat Club is not a charter company and not a conventional boat hire business. It is being developed as a membership-based boat club, planned to launch in Cape Town in 2027. Members will reserve an available boat from the Club fleet, and the Club will manage the fleet, its berthing, maintenance and cleaning.

The launch fleet, the marina and the exact competency and onboarding requirements will be announced before membership applications open. If the idea of regular boating without owning a boat appeals to you, compare boat club vs boat ownership or register your interest.
