Self-drive boat hire in Cape Town. Or a boat club instead?
If you are looking for boat hire or boat rental in Cape Town because you want to take the helm yourself, there is a second route worth knowing about. Cape Boat Club is a membership-based boat club planned for Cape Town in 2027, created for people who want regular time on the water without owning a boat.
Launching 2027
Cape Boat Club is not operating yet and cannot offer boat hire today. This page explains how membership will differ from hiring a boat, so you can decide whether to register your interest.
How boat hire and boat rental work
Boat hire and boat rental mean the same thing. In South Africa “hire” is the more common word, and visitors often search for “rental”. Either way, you book a particular boat for a particular slot, such as a few hours, half a day or a full day, and you pay for that outing. Every trip is a new booking.
With self-drive boat hire, sometimes called bareboat rental, you skipper the boat yourself. Otherwise the boat comes with a skipper. Operators offering self-drive boat rental normally expect you to show that you can handle the boat safely, which in South Africa usually means holding a skipper’s licence that is appropriate for the vessel and the waters.
How a boat club works
A boat club replaces the single booking with a membership. As a Cape Boat Club member you will have access to the Club fleet: you reserve an available boat for the time you want, arrive at the marina and go boating. Afterwards you return the boat and the Club takes care of it.
The Club manages the fleet, its berthing arrangements, routine maintenance and cleaning. You get the experience of having a boat in Cape Town without buying, storing or looking after one.

Which one suits you?
If you are visiting and want a boat for one day, hiring from an existing operator is the straightforward choice. Powerboat hire in Cape Town is available now, and you do not need a longer commitment for a single outing.
If you live in Cape Town, or spend regular periods here, and you want boating to become part of your routine, a boat club is designed for you. It is also worth a look if you have been weighing up buying a boat. See boat club vs boat ownership for that comparison.
What we can and cannot tell you yet
Cape Boat Club is in its pre-launch phase. The launch fleet, the marina, membership pricing and the exact competency and onboarding requirements are still being finalised and will be announced before membership applications open.
If you do not hold a skipper’s licence yet (also written skipper license), you can say so when you register and tell us that you would be interested in obtaining one through the Cape Boat Club ecosystem.
